Tax Deductions for Dentists

Some deductions that may be available to dentists include:

  • Costs of medicines and medical supplies;

  • Computer equipment and software as well as insurance to protect them. For purchases over $1,000 items must be depreciated;

  • Annual Practicing Certificate

  • Professional Indemnity Insurance;

  • Professional library;

  • Travel between surgery, hospital and patients in different surgeries. Travel from home to place of work may also be deductible in some circumstances (for example where bulky equipment / tools are transported and it would be inappropriate to use public transport. Dentists should seek professional advice on this matter).

Dentists may also be entitled to general tax deductions that are not work specific, such as investment deductions or car expenses deductions.
